Should I Always Use Nappy Cream?

What is Nappy Rash?

Nappy rash occurs when moisture comes into contact with the skin, causing it to become irritated. Feces contain digestive enzymes which cause nappy rash. Ammonia, which is found in urine, isn't enough on its own to cause nappy rash, but does make irritated skin even more sore. Nappy cream forms a barrier between your baby's skin and the contents of their nappy, which stops skin becoming too moist. Nappy rash makes your baby's skin red and inflamed, sometimes with red pimples and a shiny appearance. Babies with nappy rash will be uncomfortable or cry during nappy changes.

Should I Use Nappy Cream?

It is advisable to use a nappy cream after each nappy change as using a barrier cream greatly reduces the chance of your baby getting nappy rash. Some lucky babies don't seem to get nappy rash, but most babies are prone to getting it at some point. Nappy rash is very common in newborns, as they do frequent, runny poos, and also in babies aged between 9-12 months, although babies and infants can get nappy rash anytime. Frequent nappy changes help avoid nappy rash, but they don't eliminate it. If your baby has diarrhea they are more prone to nappy rash, as well as babies who have skin conditions such as eczema, have recently been on antibiotics, and babies who have allergies to plastic nappies, or particularly sensitive skin.

Which Cream Should I Use?

Zinc cream, zinc oxide ointment and petroleum jelly are all great at protecting your baby's delicate skin from nappy rash. If you're not sure which to use on your baby, ask your pharmacist or doctor. Use it by applying a thin layer to your baby's bottom after you have cleaned and thoroughly dried the genital area.

Even if you don't use a nappy cream all the time, you should always use nappy cream if your baby does develop nappy rash to stop it getting worse. If you don't apply nappy cream to nappy rash, it could turn into thrush, or a bacterial infection. Both of these usually require medication. If your baby has severe or recurrent nappy rash, take him to see a doctor.
